Welcome Interim Director Mitch Freedman
The reception to meet our new interim director Mitch Freedman on Tuesday evening, May 28, was an upbeat event with a prevailing sense of optimism. Board President Ninan introduced Mitch and presented his extensive experience and qualifications. Mitch spoke of his vision for the library, focusing on serving the public and making the library more user-friendly by moving the most popular collections (such as DVDs and CDs) to a more accessible area on the first floor. His appointment by the board with a unanimous vote made him feel welcome, as did the positive comments by the staff and the public.
We are hopeful that Mitch will provide the leadership needed at this time.

Why The New City Library Watch Was Formed
The New City Library Watch was created because so few people in our community are aware of the actions of the Board and so few participate in the election of Trustees. The New City Library Watch is comprised of library members who are concerned that the current Board of Trustees is not acting in the best interest of the library. We monitor all monthly meetings of the Board and report our observations to the community via emails and this website. We anticipate that community interest in the library will inspire highly qualified candidates to seek positions on the Board and encourage the public to participate in the elections.
Mission Statement
The mission of the New City Library Watch is to provide information on the actions of the Library’s Board of Trustees to Clarkstown residents who are served by the New City Library.
The New City Library Watch will also provide information on the qualifications of candidates who are running for positions on the Board at the annual election in December. The goal is to achieve a Board that will best serve the community.

Vision Statement
We envision a Library Board of Trustees that serves to fulfill specified functions which include establishing policy for the library, hiring a Director of the Library, evaluating the Director’s job performance, and presenting the annual budget for public vote.
The Director is the Chief Administrator and is the only one who has the professional qualifications to manage the library. Trustees should not be involved with the management of the library.
Our vision for the future is a Board of Trustees that limits its activities to its designated functions without exerting control or influence over the Director or staff.
